Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki
Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki – Delicious and simple to make, This is Chicken marinated in greek flavours and threaded onto skewers, served with a creamy tzatziki drizzle and rolled into a tortilla as a healthy alternative to pitta bread or flatbread.
Currently my to do list is out of control. This time of year is the busiest for food bloggers and I am feeling an overwhelming urgency to get things done. So my food making is all about quick OR easy. This fits the bill perfectly because whilst the chicken is marinading, I can continue to work. YAY! Everything else comes together pretty quickly and easily.
Souvlaki is one of the most popular street foods in Greece. I think I know why! It’s basically a pitta bread stuffed with delicious juicy greek flavoured chicken or meat of your choice and drizzled with a cooling tzatziki sauce. The most important step in making this Souvlaki is the marinade! In this chicken souvlaki recipe, the chicken is first marinated to soak up all the wonderful Greek flavours and then cooked till juicy. Chicken Souvlaki is basically Greek chicken kebabs marinated in oregano, garlic, lemon, olive oil and salt and pepper. So simple, but amazingly flavourful.
I used to eat this a lot, along with gyros during my student days. We used to go to a greek restaurant/cafe all the time. It was AMAZING. I just loved the simplicity of the flavours, along with the fresh salad and the velvety tzatziki drizzle. Greek food really is one of my favourite foods. Most mediterranean foods seem to be loved by all, don’t they?
Oregano by the way is a good antioxidant and healthy herb and that has to be a reason to include it in everything! It also has many other benefits including its antibacterial properties, boosts immunity, aids digestion and speeds up the metabolism.
Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki
Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki - Chicken marinated in greek flavours, threaded onto skewers, served with tzatziki and rolled into a tortilla as a healthy alternative to pitta bread or flat bread.
- 4 Chicken Breasts skinless and boneless and cut into 2cm chunks
- 4 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 Lemon Juice of
- 2-3 small cloves Garlic crushed
- 2 tbsp dried Oregano
- 1 tsp Cumin Optional
- 1 tsp Paprika Optional
- Salt and Pepper
- 8 Tortilla Wraps
- 1 Cucumber Peeled and seeds removed
- 2 cloves Garlic crushed
- 3 tbsp Olive Oil
- 500g Greek Yoghurt
- 1 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar
- Salt to taste
Place the chicken and marinade into a bowl and set aside to marinade for at least 2 hours or overnight.
Preheat the grill and cook the chicken souvlaki for about 10 - 15 minutes turning occasionally, until nicely coloured on all sides and cooked through.
Grate the cucumber and sprinkle with salt. Set aside for 10 minutes. Squeeze out the excess water from the cucumbers between tea towels.
Combine all the remaining ingredients for the tzatziki in a small bowl and stir in the cucumber. Set aside.
Toast the wraps in a dry frying pan for 2 minutes each side (Over a medium/high heat).
Add some lettuce leaves and greek salad (see recipe in notes), add the chicken and tzatziki and enjoy!
- Soak the skewers in water. (This will prevent them from burning.)
Serve with this Greek Salad.You can skip the feta if you wish!
