Years ago, me and my friends used to go to Oasis in Blackburn when it was brand new I might add. I don’t know if they were good later on because I stopped going and also they shut down. I am unsure what is in its place now. At the time, they used to make the best chicken tikka kebabs at that time and this reminds me of that. It is typical street food and I love it. Messy, delicious and irresistible. This is the kind of food that I think they do better up north served with lashings of garlic sauce.
The best thing about this dish is that if you serve it with wholemeal or lighter wraps, it is actually a very healthy meal. It is a quick and easy meal to make as long as you remember to pre soak your skewers first and oh marinade the chicken. A definite crowd pleaser this dish works whatever the weather. The smells alone means I get company in the kitchen all of a sudden.
I prefer to use chicken thighs but honestly speaking they add a whole chunk of extra calories so I sometimes make it with breast instead. Thighs are definitely more succulent and juicy.
This is a classic that is actually very very easy to make at home and it is made with typical ingredients that you will most likely have in your kitchen already.
My hubby isn’t often home when I finish making blog food because I have to take photos during the day when it ti slight outside but he sometimes sticks his head around the door and grabs something. On the day I made these, he came and gobbled these and took some for his colleague..

Chicken Tikka Skewers - The recipe for a favourite Indian Takeaway
- 4 Chicken Thighs (Roughly 500g) boneless, skinless cut into bitesize chunks
- 3 tbsp Greek Yoghurt
- 1/2 Lime juice of
- 4 cloves Garlic crushed
- 1 heaped tsp Ginger crushed
- 3 tsp Gram Flour
- 1 tbsp Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp Kashmiri or other Red Chilli Powder
- 1/4 tsp Garam Masala Powder
- 1 1/2 tsp Coriander Powder
- 1 tsp Cumin Powder
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric
- Salt to taste
- 1-2 tbsp Butter melted
- 1/2 Lemon juice of
- 4 Wraps
- Salads, Chutneys and Sauces to serve
- 4 Skewers soaked in water for 30 minutes
Marinade the chicken in all the marinade ingredients for a few hours or overnight.
Preheat the grill to medium/high. Thread chicken onto the skewers. Place on wire rack over a tray and cook under the grill for 15 - 20 minutes. Baste regularly.
Serve warm with sauces, salads, chutneys and in a hot wrap!
The gram flour is important because it helps the marinade stick to the chicken. This is something my mum always does and a tip I also remember reading many many years ago on a blog by a lady called Manisha. I can't remember her surname. 🙁 Please let me know if you know who I am talking about.
