BTW I have real issues with calling any vegetable steak but apparently it’s the done thing and who am I to question that?
I’m sure, other people must do this. Most daal recipes scream comfort to me but this is another level of comfort. I have added prawns before and it tastes divine. I know it sounds weird. I add chicken quite often too.
BTW I’m a little obsessed with cauliflower? And apparently so is the rest of the food world. I mean did you see Marcus making that cauliflower steak on Masterchef?That was the best looking cauli I did ever see. It’s kind of like a new obsession and there is cauliflower everything now. Even Oprah has come out with a cauliflower crust pizza.

So needless to say..one is a little obsessed. I am equally if not more obsessed with dal. So this was always going to be a winner in my book. Plus dal is perfect cold weather food and today it is extra cold. Like brain freeze cold. I waited around in town for the shops to open, so I could pick up some layers to wear underneath and on top of my clothes but it was too cold to hang about and I just ended up running home instead.
Also it’s healthy. Cauliflower and lentils and an egg and pickled onions. OH YES. Also the kids won’t turn their noses up at it. Well that’s if they like cauliflower. My son doesn’t so I had to lift it out of his bowl.
I do hope you try this soon. Obviously you can make it with any dal including your own favourite dal recipe…and you can add any toppings. So this is almost a non recipe.. and you could just half boil your egg so it drips into the daal and oh gosh i’m drooling..must go.

Loaded Daal with Cauliflower Steak and Quick Pickled Onions - Recently, I have started to get into loading my dal up with toppings. There is the usual tadka situation but then a couple of extra things to make it even more hearty, wholesome and delicious.

- 1 small head Cauliflower cut into 1 inch steaks
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 2 tsp Cumin
- 1 tsp Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric
- 1 Red Onion cut into slices
- 1/2 large Lime juice of
- Pinch Salt
- 4 Eggs Fully boiled or half boiled
Make dal according to the recipe in the notes.
Preheat oven to 200c/Gas mark 6.
Rub the oil and all the other ingredients into the cauliflower. Ass to a lined tray and bake for 20 - 25 minutes.
Quick Pickled Onions
Add all the ingredients for the onions to a small bowl and set aside.
Ladle the daal into bowls and top with cauliflower, onions and egg.
