Onion Raita is an alternative to Cucumber Raita and is a side my mum makes all the time.  Made with Red Onions, Plain Yoghurt, a hint of Mint (Optional) and Salt. This recipe is highly adaptable and is the perfect cooling, accompaniment to a spicy meal.

Onion Raita

Raita is a very easy dip/side, that is almost a non recipe, recipe. It goes well with indian dishes like Chicken Handi or Lamb Karahi and even grilled meats.

This is one of those recipes that barely requires a written recipe. Most people can make it with their eyes closed.

My version of Onion Raita (or rather my mums) is made with red onion, plain yoghurt, salt and a little mint.

Raita

Raita is highly adaptable.

Raita is also made with grated or chopped cucumber, it can also have tomato in it as well as peppers, aubergine, pineapple, corn.

Herbs and Spices and Variations in Raita

You can add Coriander, Chopped Green Chillies, Mint, Roasted Cumin Seeds or Ground Cumin, Chaat Masala, Ground Red Chilli Powder, Lime Juice, Lemon Juice, Garlic, Ginger, Sugar etc. (I found that really odd when I first tasted it but I like it now). They all add their own flavours, textures, aromas.

How to make Onion Raita?

This is such an easy recipe!

The thickness of the yoghurt is up to you. I like to keep it creamy and a little thick.

You chop the onions and mix them in yoghurt, add salt, add any other add ins that you like - Mint, Coriander, Roast Cumin..Whatever you like. I keep it simple by adding very few chopped Mint leaves and Salt.

Keema Rice

Chicken Pulao

Chicken Hyderabadi

Storage instructions for Onion Raita

Raita keeps well in the fridge covered in a container with a lid, for up to a day. It will be more watery and you will have to stir it all together before serving.
