Air Fryer Whole Chicken
I have owned an air fryer for a number of years now and one of the first things I ever made in it was a whole Chicken.
Nowadays I have a couple of the Ninja Air Fryers and they really are one of the most indispensable gadgets in my kitchen. That and the Ninja Grill and Kitchen Aid!
Once you make a whole chicken in an airfryer, you will do it over and over again. My husband says he prefers it to an oven baked roast chicken!
This Air Fryer Whole Chicken is oozing with all the flavour of herby garlicky rich butter and it will be ready to eat in an hour.
A juicy roast chicken with crispy skin is the ultimate Sunday roast for us so we were always going to try making it in the air fryer! We are so glad that we did because we were rewarded with the most juiciest meat and crispiest chicken. There wasn't even a slight hint of dryness!
This is divine meal for a midweek family meal but is probably more likely to be enjoyed on the weekend.
It is great for when you have guests coming over too because it is very easy to make.
I like to serve this alongside a simple crisp salad, roast potatoes and jewelled rice.
The great thing about having a rotisserie chicken at home is that in the unlikely case that you have leftovers, you can use the leftover meat for sandwiches, soups and wraps.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR THIS RECIPE
To make this easy dinner, you will need the following:
Full Skin on Chicken = golden, glistening, gorgeous crispy skin.
Garlic – crushed into the butter for delicious flavour.
Olive Oil and Butter - Both combined means lots of flavour and crispy skin.
Salt and Pepper - Seasoning always brings everything together perfectly.
Lemon - Goes so well with Chicken.
Herbs – You can use any herbs or dried Italian seasoning if you prefer AND/OR A Dry Rub - A dry rub combined with butter under the skin and on top, means you get the best flavour into and on top of the chicken.
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST AIR FRYER WHOLE CHICKEN
Wash the chicken and clean.
Then spoon in the garlic herb butter under the skin and on top.
Rub olive oil on skin and season all over.
Place half a Lemon in the cavity of the Chicken.
VARIATIONS
Use your favourite Herb such as Rosemary or Thyme.
Vary the seasoning – Add Onion powder, Garlic powder, or your favourite seasoning to the Butter.
Add Spices – Such as Chilli flakes, Paprika or Cayenne Pepper.
HOW TO STORE AIR FRYER WHOLE CHICKEN
Transfer any leftovers in an airtight container, and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
To reheat, place in the microwave and heat till warmed through.
Prep Ahead
This recipe is so easy to make. Season and prep the chicken ahead of time and just keep in the fridgeuntil needed. Remove 20 minutes before using.
How to Freeze Air Fryer Whole Chicken
To Freeze –
Trasfer to an airtight container or z large ziplock bag.
Store in the freezer up to 3 months.
To reheat - allow to defrost in the fridge overnight and then reheat on the stove or in the oven on low heat.
TIPS AND TRICKS
This recipe is easy enough to make but to take it from average to phenomenal, I have some tips and tricks below!
Spread Butter under the skin and all over the Chicken. It tastes better that way!
Tie legs together with twine. Keeping the meat together and compact means juicier results!
Make sure the Chicken is out of the Fridge for 20 minutes before cooking.
Make sure your chicken is dry prior to adding the flavoured butter.
Make sure you buy a Chicken that will fit inside your Air Fryer basket. Mine was 4lb but many air fryers can't take one that size. In that case, adjust the timing for air frying.
Place the chicken breast side down. There are 2 reasons for this. It fits better (if your air fryer is small) and it means the breasts remain juicy.
Let the Chicken rest for 15 minutes before you start carving.
The intensity of Air fryer temperatures between models can be different, meaning different results. So check the chicken is cooked through!
It is important to make sure the internal temperature of the breast is 75C.
If you use a smaller Chicken, you will need to adjust cooking times.
How Long To Cook Whole Chicken in Air Fryer?
The length of time needed to cook a whole chicken in an air fryer, is between 45 - 60 minutes. It depends on the size of the Chicken.

Air Fryer Whole Chicken
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp Butter Melted
- 6 cloves Garlic Crushed
- 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika
- 2 tablespoon Fresh Herbs I used Tarragon and Thyme, Chopped
- Salt and Pepper
- 4 lb Whole Chicken Skin On, Giblets removed and Cleaned
- 2 tablespoon Oil
- ½ Lemon
Instructions
- Combine Butter, Garlic, Smoked Paprika, Herbs and Salt and Pepper to make a paste.
- Rub olive oil on skin and season all over.
- Add Lemon into the cavity and tie the legs with twine.
- Spray the air fryer basket with non stick spray and place chicken into the basket breast side down. Close air fryer lid, press air crisp at 180 C for 45 min. Then turn and cook for another 10 - 15 minutes.(This depends on the size of the Chicken). So check from 15 minutes onwards. Check that the meat is cooked through and cook longer if needed.
- Remove when done, and leave to rest for 15 minutes.
