Apple Crumble is,  for many people the first food thing they ever made. Homely, comforting, simple and delicious - Apple Crumble is a dessert that is easy to make and one that is loved by just about everyone.

In this recipe, Apples are lightly spiced and then topped with a crunchy, buttery lightly spiced crumb.

    DELICIOUS Apple Crumble

If I'm honest, it's hard to get Apple Crumble wrong.

The reason that I love this particular recipe is that:

    • It has a toasty, buttery, crispy, golden delicious crust.
    • It has a filling of juicy cinnamon spiced apples.
    • Served with Custard, it is the best dessert ever. Second only to my fave - Victoria Sponge.
    • The smell when you crack open that oven door is worth the chopping, peeling and crumble making.

    Best apples for Apple Crumble

I like to use Bramley Apples or Granny Smith apples.

I like that they are slightly tart and that I get to then add sugar to sweeten it according to my preference.

I have used Braeburn which are slightly sweeter because my kids love them. They work fine but I did have to adjust the quantity of sugar in the crumble mix.

    Ingredients in Apple Crumble

Apples - Peeled and chopped into even-ish sized chunks (1 cm chunks).

Flour - In both the fruit and the topping.

Light Brown Sugar or Caster Sugar - To add sweetness to the fruit and crumb.

Lemon Juice - This stops the apples from colouring but also lifts the dish.

Ground Cinnamon - Apple Crumble just isn't apple crumble without it.

Rolled Oats - These add a little texture.

    Dermerera - For some crunch.

Butter - To make the most delicious crumb.

    How to make it

Heat oven to Gas Mark 4/180 C.

Peel and cut apples into 1cm chunks.

Add to a bowl along with Flour, Light Brown Sugar, Lemon Juice and Cinnamon.

Serve with Custard, Cream or Ice Cream.

    Variations

Apples - Weigh them before peeling and coring. Use your favourite variety. I use Bramley Apple.

Sugar - Adjust the sugar for the fruit according to your preference. If you prefer a more tart flavour, cut back on the sugar.

Make Ahead - Prep the recipe but don't add the crumble on top of the fruit.  Cover topping with cling wrap then crumble over just before baking.

Other Fruit - Use Pears, Peaches or Plums instead of Apples.

Spices - Add your favourite fragrant Spices to the mix!

Berries - You can also add Berries to the mix but you may need to add a little more flour to the fruit to make it more jammy and less watery.

Pre cook Apples - You can cook the Apples for 2 - 3 minutes beforehand. This may mean they release water. In which case add a little more Flour to absorb the juices.

Dish - I used a 22 x 17 Pyrex dish for this recipe but have tried it in a smaller dish too and it worked just as well but I had to increase the timings slightly.
