What is Lazy Cat Cake?
Lazy Cat Cake is a no-bake, layered dessert made from simple supermarket ingredients and minimal prep. It combines all the best textures- soft, creamy, rich, and crunchy in every single bite.
The magic lies in the layering: moist chocolate cake soaked in chocolate milk, a silky cream cheese filling, a glossy chocolate layer, and finally, a chocolate-coated cornflake topping that adds the perfect crunch.
It's called lazy because it's ridiculously easy to make, and cat because the crunchy topping has a playful, 'cat food' look to it (don't worry - it tastes divine!). Some even call it the Krunchoco Cake, thanks to its irresistible crispy top.
This version uses cornflakes or feuilletine flakes for the perfect light crunch that contrasts beautifully with the creamy and chocolatey layers beneath. It's a crowd-pleasing, no-bake dessert that's ideal for Eid, Christmas, or any family gathering.
This Lazy Cat Cake is the kind of dessert you make when you're craving something chocolatey, creamy, and a little over-the-top but can't be bothered with baking from scratch. It's indulgent, rich, and ridiculously easy to pull together. Layers of soft chocolate cake, whipped cream cheese, silky ganache, and a crunchy cornflake topping make this one an instant crowd-pleaser.
Why You'll Love This Dessert
This is the kind of recipe that looks like you've spent hours in the kitchen but really takes just minutes to put together. It's creamy, rich, and completely addictive, the kind of dessert that disappears first from any dessert table.
Perfect for Eid celebrations, dinner parties, or even a midweek treat, this no-fuss Lazy Cat Cake with Cornflakes or Feuilletine is your new go-to make-ahead dessert.
It's rich, creamy, and full of contrasting textures - soft cake, airy cream, silky ganache, and crunchy topping. Plus, it's completely no-bake and comes together in minutes. Lazy? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely.

Versatile: Add your own twist with espresso (for mocha vibes), Biscoff spread, nuts, pretzels, or even Middle Eastern flavours like kataifi.
Kid Friendly: Easy enough that kids can help assemble - a perfect family activity before Eid!
The Layers of Lazy Cat Cake
Here's what makes this indulgent dessert so special:
Base Layer: A soft, moist chocolate cake. You can absolutely make your own fudgy chocolate sponge, but honestly, a store-bought one works beautifully. I used the Delicious Double Chocolate Jumbo Loaf Cake from Aldi (about the same as two smaller supermarket loaf cakes) or Chocolate Mini Rolls or Muffins.
Chocolate Milk Soak: The secret to keeping things irresistibly moist. Simply poke holes into the cake and drizzle over chocolate milk. (Even the poking of the holes isn't absolutely necessary with some cakes). You can use shop-bought, or make your own by whisking cocoa powder and milk over low heat with a splash of vanilla.
Cream Layer: A dreamy blend of cream cheese (or mascarpone), thickened/double cream, and a touch of condensed milk for sweetness. Whisk until it forms soft peaks - it should feel light, fluffy, and mousse-like.
Chocolate Ganache Layer: For that glossy finish, melt some chocolate spread (yes, the jarred kind!) in the microwave in short bursts. Or, if you're feeling fancy, make a quick ganache using equal parts double cream and chocolate.
Crunchy Cornflake Topping: For the perfect finishing touch, coat cornflakes in melted chocolate and a dusting of cocoa powder. Sprinkle them on top just before serving for a delicious crunch. (This keeps them crispy and stops them from going soggy.)

Step 1 - Prepare the Cake Layer
Slice your chocolate cake and layer it into the base of a rectangular dish (around 25cm x 19cm or 9x7 inch).

Step 2 - Soak the Cake
Using a fork or skewer, poke holes all over and drizzle generously with chocolate milk until the cake is moist.

Step 3 - Whip the Cream Cheese Layer
Beat together cream cheese (or mascarpone), thickened/double cream, and condensed milk until smooth and softly whipped. Spread this over the soaked cake layer and chill for at least 30 minutes.

Step 4 - Add the Chocolate Layer
Melt your chocolate spread (or pour over prepared ganache) and spread evenly across the cream layer. Return to the fridge for 2-3 hours to set.

Step 5 - Top with Crunchy Cornflakes
Coat cornflakes in a little melted chocolate and cocoa powder, then scatter over the top just before serving.

Note - My husband decided to freeze the topping first to make it easier to transfer on top of the dessert, hence the appearance. It's a nice idea if you are serving it alot later in the day, however, this is not necessary!
Pro Tips & Variations
- Keep it Crunchy: Add the cornflake or feuilletine topping right before serving to keep that irresistible texture.
- Flavour Twist: Add a shot of espresso to the chocolate milk soak for a mocha-inspired version.
- Gingerbread Swap: Use Biscoff spread instead of chocolate for a rich gingerbread/caramel flavour.
- Nutty Crunch: Add roasted nuts or pretzels for extra texture - think, Snickers vibes!
- Alternative toppings - Swap cornflakes for cocoa pops, rice puffs, or even crushed biscuits if you prefer.
- Add a drizzle - Add a drizzle of caramel or chocolate sauce on top
Make Ahead
Make Ahead - Assemble the base, soak, and cream layers the night before; add the chocolate and topping before serving.
Storage (Fridge) - This cake keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days, though it rarely lasts that long!
FAQs - Lazy Cat Cake (Cornflake Version)
Why is it called Lazy Cat Cake?
Because it's lazy - incredibly easy to make with minimal prep and no baking and cat because the crunchy topping resembles cat food! The name stuck thanks to its fun, quirky vibe.
Who created Lazy Cat Cake?
This viral dessert was created by Kuwaiti chef Ahmad Al Zamel, who shared it during Ramadan. It quickly became a sensation across the Middle East for its simple steps and luxurious taste.
What's the best topping to use - Cornflakes or Feuilletine?
Both work beautifully! Cornflakes give a nostalgic crunch, while feuilletine (thin, crisp pastry flakes) adds a delicate, buttery texture. Choose your favourite or mix the two for the best of both worlds.
