What are Croffles?
Croffles are a popular recipe from South Korea in which Croissants are cooked in a waffle maker to turn them into the most indulgent crispy, caramelised and delicious waffles with flaky layers.
Now popular in Coffee shops all over the world, this social media sensation is definitely worth making at home.
Many recipes use premade Croissant Dough but that can be pretty difficult to find in the UK.
You can use Puff Pastry instead but I find that using mini croissants makes life a lot easier making them ideal for busy mornings.
The recipe is pretty simple, just add a layer of sugar to some mini waffles and press in a waffle maker till golden brown and toasty.
You can then add toppings of your choice or cut the croissant horizontally across the middle and add the toppings as fillings.
OR you could add fillings between 2 of your delicious homemade croffles for a yummy sharing dessert.
Ingredients needed to make Sweet Croffles
You only really need 2 main ingredients to make croffles!
Mini Frozen Croissants
I use thawed frozen croissants in this recipe. Or use Crescent Dough sheets (in the USA), or Puff Pastry cut into triangles.
Sugar
Caster, Light Brown Sugar or Icing Sugar. You can also add some Cinnamon to the Sugar to create a Cinnamon Sugar.
Fillings

How to make this Croffle Recipe
The best thing about this recipe, is that it is so quick and easy to make! Here is how to make them.
Lightly grease the waffle iron by brushing over some oil or spraying with cooking spray.
Preheat the waffle iron.
Place sugar in a large bowl and roll the croissant into the sugar to coat.
Tip - You can brush over some egg or butter before adding the croissants to the bowl of sugar to help it adhere but I don’t think it is necessary.
Place a croissant into the waffle iron and cook for 1.5 to 2 minutes, until golden brown.
Tip - Don’t be tempted to overbake as the sugar will burn. They will continue to crisp after they are removed from the waffle plate.
How to make Croffles with Puff Pastry
Roll a sheet of thawed Puff Pastry onto a floured surface. Cut horizontally across to create 2 strips. Cut each strip into triangles.
At this stage you can add a filling such as Nutella to make Nutella Croffles or even Sweetened Cream Cheese. Don’t add too much as the filling will ooze out and the croissants won’t bake properly.
Roll the puff pastry up to create a croissant. To do this, roll up from the larger side until a croissant shape is formed.
Then continue with the recipe as normal.
