Ingredients needed for Nutella Waffles
Plain Flour
Or All Purpose Flour. You can also use Self Raising Flour.
If you do, you will need to add just ½ teaspoon Baking Powder. You can also make the waffles with Oat Flour.
Baking powder
This is a raising agent that gives the waffles some rise and also makes them fluffy.
Egg
These help to bind the ingredients together and they also make the waffles light and fluffy.
Buttermilk
This creates more lift and makes the waffles fluffy. It isn’t essential though.
You can add Lemon to Milk instead and leave it to stand for 10 minutes to make your own.
Or you can use any kind of Milk - Normal or Plant based.
Nutella
The star of the show. You can use Supermaket Chocolate Hazlenut spread. It needs to be at room temperature or melted.
Vanilla Extract
This adds flavour and somehow seems to bring the flavours of the waffles together.
Butter
We use melted, cooled butter to make the pancakes. I use unsalted.
Salt
A good pinch helps to balance flavours and bring everything together.
Sugar
Granulated, Caster or Light Brown Sugar will work well.
Oil
To grease the waffle iron. Use a cooking spray or butter.
How to make them
Full instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the post. Here is a quick summary:
Preheat your waffle iron according to the waffle maker instructions.
(If like me you have a cast iron version that goes directly on to the hob, place over medium heat).
Whisk the Eggs and Sugar together in a medium bowl.
Whisk in melted Butter, Buttermilk, Vanilla and melted Nutella, until fully incorporated.
In a seperate bowl combine Flour, Salt and Baking Powder. Fold the Flour mixture into the wet ingredients. Don’t be tempted to over mix. It is ok if there are some lumps.
When the waffle maker is ready, spray with non-stick spray. Ladle some waffle batter into the waffle machine and close.
Cook for 3-4 minutes or until the waffles are golden brown.
Continue with the remaining batter. The amount of batter you get in this recipe is approximately 3 cups (750ml).
Serve with a tablespoon of Nutella drizzled over the top.
(The version above had some added Cocoa Powder in the batter).
Tips and Tricks
- Once the Flour is added to the batter, do not over mix as this will result in overcooked dense waffles.
- If you are making a large quantity of waffles, pop the waffles an oven tray and place into the oven at 150 C/300 f/Gas Mark 2, to keep them warm.
- Don’t be tempted to peek as it will affect the cooking of the waffles.
- Grease the waffle maker with either butter, oil or an oil spray to stop the waffles from sticking.
Variations
Use a large spoon to stir in chocolate chips, berries, or substitute the Nutella for Biscoff.
You can also use store brought belgian waffles and just top them with Nutella for a super easy brunch recipe!
