Best Nutella Waffles - EASY Recipe

The great thing about waffles, is that they are super adaptable and so making a nutella version just made sense.

This is a great way to up your waffle game because a stack of waffles makes the best breakfast ever!

These Nutella waffles have Nutella in the batter as well as on top and they are perfect for Nutella lovers.

They are wonderfully crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

If you are a fan of Nutella Recipes this is the best way to use it! If you have any leftover, why not try Nutella Cups, The Easiest Nutella Ice Cream, Nutella Triple Chocolate Cookie Dough, Best Nutella Pizza with Oreos, Nutella Tiramisu or Nutella Cookies.

Why you will LOVE this Recipe

    • They are packed with delicious Nutella flavour!
    • They are loved by adults and kids alike.
    • They take waffles to the next level!
    • They freeze well. Make a bigger batch and freeze them throughout the month.

    Ingredients needed for Nutella Waffles

    Plain Flour

Or All Purpose Flour. You can also use Self Raising Flour.

If you do, you will need to add just 1/2 tsp Baking Powder. You can also make the waffles with Oat Flour.

    Baking powder

This is a raising agent that gives the waffles some rise and also makes them fluffy.

    Egg

These help to bind the ingredients together and they also make the waffles light and fluffy.

    Buttermilk

This creates more lift and makes the waffles fluffy. It isn’t essential though.

You can add Lemon to Milk instead and leave it to stand for 10 minutes to make your own.

Or you can use any kind of Milk - Normal or Plant based.

    Nutella

The star of the show. You can use Supermaket Chocolate Hazlenut spread. It needs to be at room temperature or melted.

    Vanilla Extract

This adds flavour and somehow seems to bring the flavours of the waffles together.

    Butter

We use melted, cooled butter to make the pancakes. I use unsalted.

    Salt

A good pinch helps to balance flavours and bring everything together.

    Sugar

Granulated, Caster or Light Brown Sugar will work well.

    Oil

To grease the waffle iron. Use a cooking spray or butter.

    How to make them

Full instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the post. Here is a quick summary:

Preheat your waffle iron according to the waffle maker instructions.

(If like me you have a cast iron version that goes directly on to the hob, place over medium heat).

Whisk the Eggs and Sugar together in a medium bowl.

Whisk in melted Butter, Buttermilk, Vanilla and melted Nutella, until fully incorporated.

In a seperate bowl combine Flour, Salt and Baking Powder.  Fold the Flour mixture into the wet ingredients. Don’t be tempted to over mix. It is ok if there are some lumps.

    Nutella waffle batter in bowl

When the waffle maker is ready, spray with non-stick spray. Ladle some waffle batter into the waffle machine and close.

    Batter added to waffle iron

Cook for 3-4 minutes or until the waffles are golden brown.

Continue with the remaining batter. The amount of batter you get in this recipe is approximately 3 cups (750ml).

Serve with a tablespoon of Nutella drizzled over the top.

    Tips and Tricks

    • Once the Flour is added to the batter, do not over mix as this will result in overcooked dense waffles.
    • If you are making a large quantity of waffles, pop the waffles an oven tray and place into the oven at 150 C/300 f/Gas Mark 2, to keep them warm.
    • Don’t be tempted to peek as it will affect the cooking of the waffles.
    • Grease the waffle maker with either butter, oil or an oil spray to stop the waffles from sticking.

    Variations

Use a large spoon to stir in chocolate chips, berries, or substitute the Nutella for Biscoff.

You can also use store brought belgian waffles and just top them with Nutella for a super easy brunch recipe!

What to serve with Nutella waffles

Serve drizzled with Nutella and top with fresh Fruits.

Add a squirt of Cream or a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream to make it a Dessert.

Add a drizzle of Maple Syrup or Golden Syrup.

Serve with milk, chocolate milk or a hot drink.

    Storage

Store batter in the fridge in an airtight jar/container for up to 5 days.

Store leftover nutella waffles in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

    How to freeze Nutella Waffles

Cool completely and then place on baking paper on a tray.

Cling film the tray and place into the  freezer for 2 hours. Then remove to a ziplock bag or air-tight container.

To use, defrost in the fridge overnight. Reheat in the microwave, waffle maker or toaster oven.
